What is Jibidee?
Jibidee is a free, private, secure place to write down, save and organize the little "stuff" in your life... and share if you want. It's also a brand new kind of website, works similar to a Windows or Mac "desktop" but on the Internet and inside your browser...it's a "webtop"!
What kind of things can I do with Jibidee?
You can make lists of anything, create simple text documents (notes, etc.), upload scanned documents and/or pictures and selectively share any of these items privately with friends and family if you choose. Examples of lists and simple text documents could include a simple grocery list, to-do list, phone call notes, book list, softball roster, home inventory, emergency phone numbers, Christmas wish list, meal tracker, vacation ideas, favorite restaurants... unlimited! Coming soon: Calendar, Photo Albums, Reminders, Address Book, and Mobile Access.
Why create and save documents on Jibidee instead of my local computer using a word processor or a spreadsheet?
There are several reasons. (1) Word processors and spreadsheets do not handle "mini-documents" very well such as simple lists, notes, etc. They are designed for single, large, involved documents. Jibidee is designed for the simple little lists and notes of life. (2) Documents on your computer are not easily shared with friends and family. Jibidee sheets are just a few clicks away from being privately shared with anyone you have an email address. (3) You typically have to be at your computer to access files on your computer. Jibidee sheets are accessible from any computer in the world with an Internet connection. (4) Most people do not have reliable backups of their documents in the event of a computer crash. Jibidee sheets are backed-up nightly and you don't have to worry about your computer losing or corrupting your files. (5) Jibidee comes with over 100 starter templates. (6) Jibidee is more fun! You can personalize with color and background images.
How is Jibidee different from Google Docs, Ta-Da List or other similar sites?
Other sites are either (1) cumbersome to use (2) focused on "business productivity" and/or (3) limited in functionality. For example, some sites are geared toward to-do lists and can't easily handle a multi-column, non-checklist list (e.g. Diet/Meal Tracker with columns for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Calories, etc.) or a simple notepad. Some sites require you to enter a priority and end date on every task and setup a "project" for a simple to-do list! Other sites, like Google Docs, are focused on "business productivity" so they're a bit dry and over-complex for everyday personal/home use. But most of all, Jibidee is a brand new web experience unlike any other. Those other sites don't give you a flexible "webtop" experience allowing you to open multiple sheets/lists/notes at the same time, stack and toggle between them, colorize and customize, change your background image, etc. That's why we gave the site a unique and whimsical name, Jibidee, because the site is fun and unlike any other!
Who developed Jibidee and why?
Jibidee (Webcarnation LLC) is based in Tampa, FL and the concept was born in early 2007 out of the founders' frustration with organizing their own home information and documents. There were no good websites to do it the way they envisioned it should be: a super simple, super flexible place to make simple lists and notes and share with friends and family. The founders teamed up with a team of local, super talented developer friends (projects with Disney, Electronic Arts, Lexus/Toyota, etc.), a friend at Adobe, and others to design and build the first version of Jibidee.
How secure is my information on Jibidee?
We take security on the site very seriously. We employ the "McAfee Secure" certification process to regularly scan our servers for intrusion vulnerabilities. We use SSL (Secured Socket Layer) encryption technology from Thawte for all data transmission to and from the site. Additionally, our web servers are protected by a Cisco firewall, housed in a tier-one, 53,000 square foot, professionally managed data center with card & biometric security in place, monitored 24x7x365.
How does sharing work?
Simple, if you know someone's email address, you can send them an invite to view any sheet in your collection, one sheet at a time. The recipient gets a link in their email that takes them directly to Jibidee and displays your shared sheet on their own separate webtop. Even non Jibidee members can receive and view shared sheets. When they click on the email link, they are automatically signed-in as a "guest" to view your sheet, no hassle and no requirement to sign-up. Once you share your sheet to someone, they can sign-on to their separate account anytime and view the sheet. The people you share sheets with do not have access to your account or any other sheet in your collection. You can stop sharing sheets to anyone at any time. Coming soon: "collaboration" on sheets where multiple users that you specify and control, can make changes to the same shared sheet (gift registry, to-do lists, etc.).
Why not just share my lists, notes, etc. via email instead of Jibidee?
Email is inefficient. First of all you have to save all of these mini-documents as "files" and then attach them to an email, specify all the recipients and then send. Make an update to the file? With email you'd have to go through the process all over again, save, attach, specify recipients, and send. This is too much work and can be confusing for everyone involved. With Jibidee, you create the sheet, add people to the share list for that sheet and you are done. Now anytime you make an update to the sheet, since there is only one original, they can immediately view the update without any extra work on your part. It's simply a shared sheet, viewable anytime by your specified contacts for as long as you choose.
How private is the sheet sharing?
The information you enter on this website is NOT visible to search engines or any other public location. Your information is accessible only by you and those you specifically share information with through the sharing function. In the event you share information with someone (via their email address), only that person can view the particular information you shared.
Is Jibidee free?
Jibidee is free up to 20 sheets. It takes a while to get to 20 and many users may never use more than 20 sheets. We wanted Jibidee to be free for a large portion of our users and setting the sheet limit as high as 20, we hope to accomplish that. We felt that our "heavy users" would exceed 20 sheets and would gladly pay for the service (see our subscription pricing).
How much does a "No-Ad" and "Unlimited Sheets" subscription cost?
The No-Ad Option is $18/year, Unlimited Sheets is $18/year and the Combo Subscription is $29/year.
What happens to my sheets if I do not renew my unlimited sheets subscription?
Nothing happens to your sheets, they remain available to you indefinitely. If you create more than 20 sheets during your unlimited subscription and then choose not to renew, you revert to the free account but all of your sheets over 20 remain available to you no matter how many you have. You just will not be able to create new sheets until you reduce your sheet count under 20 or renew your unlimited sheets subscription.
Does Jibidee display ads?
Since Jibidee is a free site, it will display ads but not the annoying kind. First of all we use a simple, unobtrusive ad panel on the right side. There are no pop-up or pop-under ads or any crazy placements to annoy or be a major distraction. Secondly, we plan most of our ads to be "contextual" which means that you will see ads related to whatever topic you are working on based on your sheet title. For example, if you are working on your "Vacation Ideas" list, you might see ads related to vacations (maybe Jibidee saves you money on your next vacation!). Sheet "content" will not be accessed to yield contextual ads, only the sheet titles. Since we are still fine-tuning the contextual ads, you may see our Starbucks placeholder ad for a while until we get that part finalized.
Why buy the No-Ad subscription? Ads don't bother me.
A big advantage to purchasing the No-Ad subscription is the removal of the right-side ad panel which expands your "webtop" workspace, allowing you to open more sheets at the same time and enjoy your custom background edge-to-edge.
Will advertisers or anyone have access to my personal information or contact me?
No, we will never share your personal information with advertisers or any third party without your permission. We may share anonymous, general demographic information with our advertisers and as mentioned above, your sheet titles only will be used to generate the automated contextual ads. For more information about how serious we are about user privacy, please review our Privacy Policy.
Can I post lists, text, documents, and pictures to the web for public viewing?
Not at this time but in the plans. Right now you can only share sheets privately with people you know email addresses (friends, family, co-workers, etc.). Soon you will have option to publish a sheet/page to a unique URL on the web for the world to see if you choose (favorite restaurants, book lists, etc.).
How long has Jibidee been available?
We launched the invite-only private beta on March 21, 2008. For a few months we've received feedback from our beta users and improved on the site during that time. Our official public launch will be September 8th-10th 2008 from the Demo Pit at the TechCrunch50 Conference in San Francisco, CA where we were selected as a semi-finalist.
What is a beta?
Beta just means that we still in the early stages of our release and are vigorously building new features (calendar, mobile, address book, etc.).
Is Jibidee for business?
Although personal use was the primary mission with Jibidee, it can be quite useful for business. The founder and developers of Jibidee use it to run many of our daily tasks and stay organized on projects. We don't do the heavy, highly detailed project management on Jibidee but there are many things that Jibidee does better than all the heavy duty business tools that we use.
With what technology is Jibidee developed?
Jibidee was developed using Adobe's Flex technology, winner of InfoWorld's 2007 Technology of the Year and being used by Discovery Channel, Disney and others. Soon we'll be extending to the Adobe AIR technology to provide cool things like online/offline access, desktop integration, local backups, etc.
When will the calendar, reminders, photo albums, and mobile be available?
Planned for late 2008 or early 2009.
Can I backup my data?
This feature is planned for Fall 2008, ability to make a backup of your data to your local computer. In the meantime, keep in mind that we backup your data on our servers daily.
Can I import or export files from my computer (Office files, etc.)?
At this time you can upload image files (scanned documents, pictures) into your Jibidee account. Importing of other files and exporting planned for late 2008 or early 2009.
